About Us
Mbona Private Nature Reserve is an oasis of Peace, tranquility and security situated in the Karkloof Valley mist belt of the KwaZulu Natal Midlands.  The Ethos of the Reserve is the appreciation and Conservation of Nature - Recreational activities for owners and their visitors are focused on the enjoyment of the natural environment.

First established in 1968, the current 700 hectare Reserve was the brainchild of Eric McKenzie who owned the land and was advised of a similar concept in the USA. There are one hundred homes, connected by gravel roads and tucked into these gorgeous surrounds, with many of the one-acre footprint shares still owned by the original shareholders or their families. Part or whole share options occasionally become available and are listed on this site under share sales.

Shareholders enjoy a mellow lifestyle at Mbona, with a choice of many activities in nature, or just pure relaxation and unwinding. Over the recent years, the permanent resident shareholding has grown with many choosing Mbona to enjoy on a full-time basis. The Reserve is situated in a high rainfall area, with thunderstorms and mist occurring frequently during the summer months. |Winter can offer up spectacular warm days, with very crisp mornings and evenings, occasional snow and many good times around a log fire.

Mbona is a haven for a rich biodiversity of indigenous flora and fauna. The grasslands support more than 350 species of flowers. In the indigenous forests stands of clivia grow at the feet of evergreen trees during the spring months. Our Wildlife is abundant. Black wildebeest, zebra and blesbok have been introduced to the Reserve, but bushbuck, grey duiker and reedbuck are regularly seen. Caracal, serval, jackal and even occasionally leopard frequent the Reserve. Spotted genet, otters, bush-pig, porcupine, vervet and samango monkeys are thriving residents.

Our Bird list comprises over 258 forest and grassland species. More information coming soon...
